International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

IELTS Academic is mandatory if you are applying for an English-taught Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD program in Germany, unless you hold a degree from a native English-speaking country. While a few German universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate, VFS Global and the German Embassy strongly recommend an official IELTS scorecard for a smooth student visa application process.

Most public universities in Germany require an overall IELTS Academic band score of 6.5, with no individual section (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) below 6.0. Top technical universities (like TU Munich or RWTH Aachen) and specific competitive programs may require an overall score of 7.0 or higher.

The IELTS Academic exam evaluates four core language skills:

• Listening: 30 minutes

• Reading: 60 minutes

• Writing: 60 minutes

• Speaking: 11–14 minutes (interview style)

• Total Duration: 2 hours 45 minutes

• Cost in India: Approximately ₹18,000 to ₹19,000 (subject to periodic updates by IDP India).

German universities only accept IELTS Academic (taken at an official test centre in either paper-based or computer-delivered format). German public universities and Uni-Assist do not accept IELTS General Training. While some private institutions accepted IELTS Online during pandemic travel restrictions, official test-centre scores remain the most universally accepted format across state institutions.

An IELTS score report is valid for 2 years from the date of the test result. Your IELTS score must remain valid at the time of university application submission and VFS student visa filing.

An overall IELTS band score of 6.0 may be accepted by select private universities, Universities of Applied Sciences, or specific foundation programs. However, a score of 5.5 is generally insufficient for direct degree entry at public universities. Retaking the exam to achieve a minimum of 6.5 is strongly recommended to avoid admission and visa rejections.

Acceptance varies. Some state-accredited universities and Uni-Assist accept IELTS One Skill Retake results, provided the updated TRF is generated within the official validity period. However, because individual university policies vary, EduOptions Germany verifies whether your target institution accepts One Skill Retake scores before filing your application.

Certain private business schools and select public university departments accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate issued by an accredited Indian university stating your degree was conducted entirely in English. However, many public universities and the German Embassy/VFS centres now strictly require a standardised language scorecard (IELTS/TOEFL) to verify language proficiency.

German universities treat IELTS on Computer and IELTS on Paper with 100% equal validity. The key difference is turnaround speed: computer-delivered IELTS results are usually released within 1 to 5 days, whereas paper-delivered results take 13 days. Choosing the computer-delivered mode is advantageous if you are close to tight application deadlines.

You should take your IELTS exam 8 to 12 months before your target intake start date. Because APS certificate verification takes 2 to 4 months and Uni-Assist applications open several months before course start dates (e.g., March/April for the October Winter Intake), having your IELTS scorecard ready early prevents deadline bottlenecks.
